I’m a photographer from Cincinnati who loves playing with light and space when taking photos, no matter the size of the venue, or the act on stage. Live music is a multi-sensory experience, and every show has its own vibe and its own story. My task is to capture that vibe, and tell that story. No art is perfect, but capturing the moment means being okay with those imperfections. Cherishing them, even.
Negative space, whether pitch black or overly bright, entirely in focus or eye-crossingly busy, allows the viewer to see more than just the band or the musician, but instead to feel the mood, to focus on the sweat or the smoke or the movement, and to feel the energy and passion of those performing.
From bands that draw tens of thousands to the bands only playing to the others on the bill, everyone deserves photos that speak to who they are and what they’re trying to say. They might be brief moments on an infinite timeline, but that doesn’t make them any less important. I want to fill in the negative space with something positive. Offer viewers something unique. Give bands and musicians something they can recognize as their own.
These shows are a sacred space for creativity, a carefully crafted moment in time that is about more than just music. It’s about bringing people together, finding common ground, and sharing in an experience. I’m honored to be invited into these places, to capture these moments, and every now then, to bottle that lightning.
