Jellyroll Morton in Cincinnati 1924
In early June of 1924, legendary jazzman Jelly Roll Morton traveled to downtown Cincinnati to record a dozen of his compositions for the Vocalstyle Music Company, a national piano roll company. The Cincinnati Public Library will celebrate the 100th anniversary of this session with a discussion with Rick Kennedy, local author and music historian (Jelly Roll, Bix, and Hoagy: Gennett Records and the Rise of America's Musical Grassroots).
Come hear about the life and career of this New Orleans jazz pioneer as well as the history of the Cincinnati company that owned a unique piano roll patent and distributed all types of music across the States and Europe.
The program will also look at on other African American pianists who did sessions for Vocalstyle, the migration of musicians to the North and the home entertainment options of the day – the phonograph player, radio and piano rolls.
