ABOUT TRIBAL RHYTHMS:

As the morning fog burns away and the heat of the day starts to fill the air in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the fields surrounding a small soccer field start coming alive. Tribesmen and tribeswomen from over 80 different tribes from all corners of the island start to arrive. Hailing from the Southern shores, the Northern shores, and the steep center Highlands which are only accessible by planes from the capital city, they’ve made their way to a celebration like no other. Vibrant scenes of colorful facepaint patterns start to take form and treasured cabinets containing massive headdresses made of huge and colorful feathers of native species such as the Birds of Paradise start to emerge. Since the early 1960s, the tribes have gathered at Mt. Hagen not to fight, but to compete in Sing-Sing competition against the other tribes in what is known as the Mt. Hagen Cultural Festival. The competition consists of the traditional tribal costumes that identify their specific tribe as well as traditional songs and chants that are performed as each tribe enters the pitch and parades past the small set of bleachers reserved for tourists and important locals. The magnificent colors, the loud songs, the rhythmic drumming, and the heat of an August day near the Equator all combine to create an intoxicating experience that overwhelms your senses.

The photos in this exhibit feature portraits of tribespeople from a 2019 visit Peter did to Papua New Guinea that were taken at the Mt. Hagen Cultural Festival or a smaller rehearsal pre-show the day before.
